Wine & Food tourism – more need to know

Mike Underhill

Most of NZ's best food and drink establishments could get a free tourism boost, but aren't.

The crew at Tourism New Zealand have a four-year plan to boost tourism here by NZ$5 billion. The part we love most about it, is that it leverages a deep motivation for travel: enjoying food. An astounding 85% of tourists to NZ actively intend to experience local food.

Even better, if you're a tourism business in New Zealand, you can list your products, latest deals or packages FOR FREE on the Tourism Business Database and on the closest Regional Tourism Organization website.

But how many do?

As of Aug 2024, 462 ‘Food & Drink experiences’ are listed on the NZ.com website, There are around 18,000 food & drink providers in NZ. Even if we assume 90% of those enterprises are not tourist-worthy, that’s still 1,800 who are. Meaning three-quarters of the businesses who would most benefit from a tourism boost have yet to avail themselves of this outstanding service.

There's a lot of upside here.
